For GPs and Psychiatrists

We welcome referrals for mental health occupational therapy and psychotherapy. Mental health OT can form part of care alongside general medical and psychiatric treatment or other supports. Treatment goals should be clear across the treating team.

Adult Pathways

We work with adults experiencing anxiety and panic, depression and mood disorders, trauma-related conditions including PTSD and complex PTSD (C-PTSD), dissociative disorders, adjustment difficulties, and mental health concerns alongside autism or ADHD.

Reasons for referral include mental health symptoms affecting relationships, work, study or everyday responsibilities. Your patient may also be seeking support to process distressing experiences or understand recurring emotional or relationship patterns, even when other areas of life are going well.

Child and Adolescent Pathways

We work with children and adolescents experiencing anxiety, emotional overwhelm, sensory needs or social difficulties that affect participation at home, school or in relationships.

Reasons for referral include difficulties with emotional regulation, school participation, friendships, sleep or daily routines. We work with the young person, their parents or both to understand what is happening across different settings.

Our Approach

Occupation is central to our mental health OT practice, with psychotherapy forming an integral part of our approach. We identify where a mental health condition interrupts a person’s performance and participation in everyday activities and occupational roles. We look beyond the person and their skills to consider their environment and the supports around them.

Our senior occupational therapists have completed additional mental health training and hold Occupational Therapy Australia mental health endorsement. Individual clinicians have also completed training in additional treatment modalities, which vary across the team.

Occupational Therapy Australia’s Mental Health Capability Framework outlines OT capabilities in mental health assessment, therapeutic interventions, sensory modulation and collaborative care.
