Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What Can Mental Health Occupational Therapy Help with?

At OUR THERAPIES, mental health OT and psychotherapy address concerns including anxiety, depression, stress, burnout and trauma-related conditions such as PTSD and complex PTSD (C-PTSD). We consider your experiences alongside your roles, relationships, routines and surroundings. Treatment approaches and clinician allocation depend on your needs.

What Can I Expect at My First Mental Health OT Appointment?

The first appointment is a chance to discuss what brought you to therapy, what is happening in your life and what you want to understand or change. Together, you and your therapist consider your priorities and possible next steps. You do not need to have everything worked out before attending.

Do I Need a Diagnosis to Contact You?

No. You can contact us or make a referral without a diagnosis. Funding pathways may have separate eligibility requirements.

Do You Provide Psychotherapy?

Yes. Psychotherapy forms part of our mental health occupational therapy practice. Approaches depend on your needs and your therapist’s training.

Do You Work with Children and Adults?
Where Are Appointments Available?

Face-to-face at our Parkdale and Seaford clinics in Melbourne, mobile services in Brisbane Metro South, and telehealth across Australia, including regional and remote areas. Availability depends on the service and therapist.

Can I Use Medicare?

Eligible clients can access Medicare rebates for mental health OT under Better Access with an appropriate referral. The allowance of up to 10 individual sessions per calendar year is shared across eligible providers, including psychologists, occupational therapists and social workers. See Medicare for the pathways and Information for GPs and Psychiatrists for Better Access referral details.

Can I Use an Existing Mental Health Referral?

If you have unused services on a valid Better Access referral, you can use them when changing treating allied health professional. Contact us so we can check your referral and remaining services. Changing practitioners does not create extra Medicare sessions.

How Long Will Therapy Take?

The length of therapy depends on your needs and goals. We discuss the plan and review progress with you, whether you need a short period of support or longer-term therapy.

Can I Book Privately or Use Private Health Insurance?

You can access private appointments without a referral. Check your cover with your insurer before booking. See Private Funding for HICAPS codes and what to ask.

Are You an NDIS Registered Provider?

We have chosen not to register as an NDIS provider. We accept self-managed and plan-managed NDIS funding.

See NDIS Funding.

Do You Complete Functional Capacity Assessments?

Yes, for adolescents and adults. See Functional Capacity Assessments for what we assess and the information needed before starting.

Do You Offer Other Occupational Therapy Assessments?

Yes. See Occupational Therapy Assessments to discuss sensory, executive functioning or other everyday participation needs, including self-funded NDIS access assessments.

How Much Does It Cost?

See our Fees page for current fees.
